HTML-Kit is a plain-text HTML editor for the Windows platform, available as a free download. HTML-Kit also comes in a non-free version, HTML-Kit Tools. I first learned of HTML-Kit around 2007, and have used it off and on since. The online version of my Sterling Scholar portfolio<\/a> was created entirely using HTML-Kit.<\/p>\n

Compatibility: 5\/5<\/h3>\n

Since HTML-Kit is an HTML editor, its files are compatible with any HTML editor or browser. Additionally, there are numerous plug-ins available to add support and help for creating PHP and other scripting files with HTML-Kit<\/p>\n

Cross-Platform Availability: 2\/5<\/h3>\n

Unfortunately, HTML-Kit is only available on Windows platforms. For those of us who primarily use Mac or Linux, this rules HTML-Kit out as anything other than a curiosity.<\/p>\n

Extensibility: 5\/5<\/h3>\n

As mentioned under Compatibility, there are many plug-ins available through the HTML-Kit Web site.<\/p>\n

Support Quality: 4\/5<\/h3>\n

There are a lot of resources available for help, including a support forum and a Facebook page<\/a>. Unfortunately, all of the help resources are only available online, so you have to be connected to the Internet to use them. While this no doubt saves space on your hard drive, I always prefer to be able to access help files without needing an Internet connection.<\/p>\n

User-Friendliness: 5\/5<\/h3>\n

HTML-Kit is useful for those who know HTML, as well as those who are just beginning to dabble in it. There are a lot of options in HTML-Kit, which may make the interface appear complicated, but they really add to the user-friendliness. There are tabs for various HTML options, as well as menu items to help with editing. HTML tags can be added either by tag name, by the tag itself, or automatically through various wizards and menu options.<\/p>\n
